This is actually a "territorial" newspaper, as Oklahoma did not become a state until 1907, one of only 3 of the contiguous 48 to join the union in the 20th century (New Mexico & Arizona the other two).

This newspaper apparently only lasted a year, with no institutional holdings outside of Oklahoma.

This city of 41,000 is in the Monterey Bay area. The town wasn't founded until 1868 by William W. Hollister on the grounds of the former Mexican land-grant Rancho San Justo. At the time, Hollister was within Monterey County but since then San Benito County was carved from it.

Actually a territorial newspaper as New Mexico did not become a state until 1912. Although we've offered many other 19th century newspapers from New Mexico, this is just the second issue of this title and from this town in our 48 years.
Aztec is in the northwestern corner of the state. Very rare as well as the "Union List of American Newspapers" notes only one institution has any issues of this title.

Essentially a ghost town today having been split by interstate 40, and from when New Mexico was still a territory as it did not gain statehood until 1912. The entire county has less than 4700 in population.

A territorial newspaper as Arizona would not join the Union until eleven years later. At this time the population of Phoenix was just 5,500.

A scarce title, the first we have offered. The format is typical of the day with a various of local and regional reports, and a wealth of advertising. 
Four pages, printed on high-quality newsprint in a pinkish tone, very nice condition.

MOUNTAIN AND PLAIN, Denver, Colorado, July 14, 1911 

* Rare from the Rocky Mountains

One of the few newspapers we have seen which has a photograph in the masthead, in this case a photo of the Rocky Mountains.
Page 3 has part of a continuing article: "Denver's Assets" with a photo.
 The volume one, number 2 issue, 16 pages, 9 by 12 inches, printed on glossy stock newsprint, nice condition.

THE NEW MEXICAN REVIEW, Santa Fe, March 30, 1899  

* Before New Mexico became a state

This is a territorial newspaper as New Mexico did not become a state until 1912.
The front page has an article & photo on: "Captain George Curry - New Sheriff of Otero County".  Curry would become governor of New Mexico Territory from 1907 to 1910, and once it became a state he represented it in the Congress. Curry County, New Mexico is named in his honor.

THE ARIZONA GAZETTE, Phoenix, July 28, 1901  The ftpg. has a short report: "Tramp Robbers" noting: "Two tramps held up Nels Peterson & Benj. Anderson on the train near Belle Plaine...robbing both & beating Peterson & shooting Anderson. Anderson was then thrown from the train & his head cut off by the wheels."
Eight pages, irregular at the spine, otherwise good.
This is from 11 years before Arizona statehood.

MOUNTAIN AND PLAIN, Denver, Colorado, Sept. 22, 1911  One of the few newspapers we have seen which has a photograph in the masthead, in this case a photo of the Rocky Mountains.

THE EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, California, July 5, 1901  Page 7 has over a full column taken up with: "TACTICS OF BANDITS" "A Raid That Was All Carefully Planned In Advance" "How Men Like three Younger and the James Brothers Could Ride Into a Town in Broad Daylight, Rob a Bank and Get Away". A fascinating article.
Eight pages, nice condition.

THE EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, Nov. 17, 1904  Two weeks prior to this issue, two bandits presumed to be from the Hole-In-The-Wall country of Wyoming attempted to rob the First National Bank of Cody, Wyoming. Hearing of the news, the famed frontiersman and showman "Buffalo Bill" Cody reportedly got in into the chase. He is not mentioned in this report.
The top of page 2 has a one column heading: "TWO OF THE CODY BANDITS TAKEN" with subhead. (see)

A nice & very rare newspaper from this town in Western Colorado along the Colorado River. Although Gregory (Union List of American Newspapers) records a "Grand Junction Star" there is no record of "the Semi-Weekly Star".

ARIZONA GAZETTE, Phoenix, Sept. 17, 1906  Perhaps not unexpected from territorial Arizona (statehood in 1912) but later than one would expect: "NAVAJO INDIANS ON A RAMPAGE; LEAVE NEW MEXICO RESERVATION RAID CATTLE, TERRORIZE THE PEOPLE" .
Eight pages, irregular at the blank spine, good condition.

THE GLOBE, South Bethlehem, Penna., March 29, 1899  Page 2 has over half a column headed: "OUTLAW'S CONFESSION" "May Save Two Innocents Serving Life Sentences For Murder" "An Organized Band of Robbers" with more. A nice, classic "Wild West" report which implicates the Dalton Gang as well (see).
Four pages, evenly toned, some minor margin tears, should be handled carefully.

Difficult to find 19th century newspapers from Phoenix but here is one. This was published 17 years before Arizona statehood.
Various news & ads of the day including a column of: "Local Briefs" with small news tidbits; "Rode With A Skull--Terrible Experience of an Arizona Cowboy Cook" Inside has a nice map of streets showing: "Lots on which a poor man can build a home."

SANTA FE DAILY NEW MEXICAN newspaper dated 1903.  A great issue, with a wealth of news of the day both local and national (and international) and a wealth of ads as well, many of which are illustrated.
Complete in 4 pages. Spine is somewhat irregular but causing no loss of text. Browned, mainly at the edges and some minor margin tears.

SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN, New Mexico, 1903 A quite uncommon newspaper from this Western town, still 9 years before New Mexico would become a state! Nice condition. Be in touch if an image is needed.

CALIFORNIA INDEPENDENT, Los Angeles, 1901  Printed in the dateline is: "An Inter-Denominational Christian Newspaper" and in a banner which is part of the masthead: "Our Motto: Pure Religion, Pure Morals, Pure Government". As would be expected, the content is primarily religious in nature. Complete in 12 pages, 101/2 by 14 inches, never bound nor trimmed, nice condition.
