November 21, 1863
NEW YORK DAILY TRIBUNE, Nov. 21, 1863

* President Abraham Lincoln
* Gettysburg Address at cemetery

It would be difficult to argue for a more notable or desirable Civil War newspaper. Combine the complete text of the historic Gettysburg Address by President Abraham Lincoln, with this famous title by Horace Greeley, and this issue makes for one of the best newspapers one could own from the Civil War era.
Page 2 has a very lengthy, three column article headed "The Gettysburg Ceremonies""Description of the Battle-Field and Consecration Exercises" which provides the details of the dedication of this national cemetery as well as information on how it came to be, with mention of David Wills (rarely found in period accounts). In attendance was Abraham Lincoln, and following a long-winded speech by Mr. Everett, the President said his words, printed in this issue in their entirety. It has a brief introduction: "The dedicatory remarks were then delivered by the President, as follows:" and what follows are the immortal words beginning: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation...". It took Looking just 2 minutes to give his 272 word speech, yet it has gone down in history as among the most significant speeches by any President.  Some details on the President following his speech as well.
A great document to have in any historic newspaper collection. The issue would seem to be complete in 8 pages, as was typical with almost all issues of the Civil War era, however the pagination is 1-2, 5-6, 7-8, 11-12 for a total of 8 pages. The issue does not have evidence of missing pages and I suspect the pagination is in error but I cannot confirm.

Evidence of improper pagination as opposed to missing pages:

1) We had another issue in 2005 which had the same pagination.
2) No articles are incomplete - having started on one page and continued on another "missing" page.
3) All typical news/advertising sections are present.
4)  "New Publications" begins on the last column of page 8, and continues on the first column of the opposing page (which would be typical), but the opposing page is labeled page 11 - which indicates a pagination error not a missing page.
5) Pagination errors were relatively common during this era.
6) To our knowledge, no NY Tribune for this date has ever been discovered with 12 pages or with correct pagination.

Still, there is no way to know with 100% certainty.

The issue is in very good condition, but does have typical scattered minor imperfections (occasional foxing, small print creases, etc.), but is overall quite nice - better than average for the period (see images).
