January 16, 1786
THE AMERICAN MERCURY, Hartford, Jan. 16, 1786

* Battle of Lexington & Concord
* Revolutionary War

The masthead features a nice & early engraving of what looks much like the seal of the United States (see). The entire front page and half of page 2 are taken up with a portion of a continuing report on the Revolutionary War taken from the British Annual Register for 1775, this portion having a great & detailed account of the battle at Lexington & Concord. Much terrific reading here, just a few portions including: "...Upon their arrival at Lexington...they found the company of militia belonging to that town assembled on a green ear the road, upon which an officer in the van called out, 'Disperse, you rebels; throw down your arms, and disperse', the soldiers at the same time running up with loud huzzas, some scattering shots were first fired, and immediately succeeded by a general discharge by which 8 of the militia were killed & several wounded. Thus was the first blood drawn in this unhappy civil contest..." with much, much more. Great to have this content on the front page, and remember this was just 11 years after it happened.
Other interesting content inside but it pales in comparison to the front page reports.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, nice condition.
