THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 8, 1865
* General Robert E. Lee
* Confederacy commander
* Abraham Lincoln
Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", this newspaper opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It insisted that slavery could not be prohibited by law. So obnoxious was this paper to Unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
Among the reports in this issue are: "Treason--The Democratic Party" "Can We Have Peace?" "Proclamation of Jeff Davis" signed in type on the front page: Jefferson Davis; "From the South" "Secession Recognized by Congress" "War News of the Week" "Another Elegant Speech by Old Abe--He is Playing a Little Game".
A great item on page 6 is: "Jeff. Davis On Robert E. Lee" which is signed in type: Jefferson Davis and takes two-thirds of a column. This is his endorsement in naming Lee the as commander of all the armies of the Confederacy (see). The back page has a brief letter signed in type by: A. Lincoln.
Eight pages, never bound nor trimmed so it folds out to one large sheet, scattered foxing, very nice condition.
