They are described on all hands as a destitute & poverty-stricken people...Women here are little else than mere chattels, bought by the highest bidder...All the women I have sen are poorly clad, many of them barefooted...They have been decoyed here by the honeyed words & deceptive promises of Mormon emissaries abroad...They think Brigham a divine prophet; the leaders know they are imposters" and more (see)
