February 25, 1801
COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, Feb. 25, 1801
* Thomas Jefferson elected president
* Close count with Aaron Burr
The Presidential election of 1800 was one of the more contentious ever. When the ballots were counted it revealed a Jefferson-Burr tie. The tie constitutionally was tossed to the House of Representatives. Following an all-night session of 36 ballots & a deadlock, they ultimately choose Thomas Jefferson as President. This issue has a nice page 2 announcement headed: "A President Chosen" noting that a handbill had been received with: "Extra" "An express from Gen. Smith...announcing the election of Mr. JEFFERSON. I have seen the letter & you may depend on the information being correct. The cannon are now firing..." with further details (see).
Four pages, some discreet archival mends near margins, nice condition.
