For any collector of baseball history, a report of the signing of any future star always figures high on the "most wanted" list. Here is one.
The sports page, page 16, has a report at the top headed: "Yanks Sign Gehrig, Columbia Slugger" with the text including: "Lou Gehrig, Columbia pitcher, first baseman and outfielder, called by Coach Carris of Pennsylvania and other critics the 'best college player since George Sisler', has signed a contract with the Yankees...Gehrig's coming to the Yanks, however, will arouse most interest, and his work in fast company will be watched closely. He is easily the longest hitter that ever played at Columbia, and his sobriquet is 'the Babe Ruth of the colleges'..." and ending with: "...Gehrig is only a sophomore at Columbia, meaning that he has sacrificed two years of academic study to join the Yankees."
Terrific to have this report in the venerable New York Times, the home paper to the Yankees and Columbia University where he played. He was also a local New York high school stand-out.
The complete 40 page newspaper, a bit irregular at the spine from disbinding, otherwise in nice, clean condition.
