THE DAILY MEMPHIS AVALANCHE, Tennessee, July 9, 1876  The top of the first column has the heads: "THE INDIAN WAR" "Official Report of the Late Slaughter" "List of Killed--Reinforcements Sent Forward" "The Government Able to Deal with the Indians Without the Aid of Volunteers". The text begins with: "The Bismarck  Tribune, Extra, gives the following official list of the Killed & wounded in the recent encounter with the Indians on the Little Bighorn river..." followed by the list. There is then a subhead; "Crook's Expedition" followed by another report prefaced with: "The following is the official report of Gen. Terry of Custer's engagement with the Indians..." followed by the various details of the battle & signed by him in type: Alfred H. Terry and takes close to 1 1/2 columns. (see).
A second significant report on the front page has column heads: "Daring Railway Robbery" "On the Missouri Pacific Road, Near Otterville, Mo." "A Body of Masked Men "Stop the Train and Rob and Express Car" "Passengers Frightened Into Non-Resistance--Pursuit of the Miscreants". The text has considerable detail of the robbery including: "...12 or 15 men appeared & with terrific yells & discharging pistols dashed at the train proclaiming their intention...threatened to kill them if they offered resistance...When their work was done they left the scene of their daring exploit & departed in a southerly direction...All the robbers wore masks while at the train & therefore none of them were recognized...no clue to their identity has been obtained." with more (see).  Later this train robbery would be credited to the  Jesse James and Younger brothers gang of guerrillas.
Both events are lengthy & detailed accounts, and great to have on the front page. Complete in four pages and in nice condition.
