This is one of several "extra" editions of the French newspaper "The News", this one reporting on the continuation of the siege of the town of Gravelines, a commune in Northern France. The town was captured and recaptured several times by the French and Spanish between 1639 and 1658, and was finally annexed to France in the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659.
This issue is complete in 8 pages, measures 6 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches and is in great condition. The date of July 2, 1644 appears at the bottom of the back page. The newspaper is printed totally in French. One of the earliest dated newspapers to be had.
