December 11, 1862
THE LOUISVILLE DAILY JOURNAL, Kentucky, December 11, 1862

* Rare title from the Civil War
* Slave advertisement

Kentucky was one of the border states which shared allegiance depending on what the date was and in which town you were in. Officially Louisville was a Confederate city from April thru mid-September of 1861. This issue was published after Yankee occupation.

The front page of this issue has a notice offering a reward for a runaway "...black boy, named Jesse...", plus details and an engraving of a runaway.

Page 2 has an interesting letter (see for portions) from a Union officer that says, in part: "...But while I am unwilling that any of my troops should become slave catchers, I consider it my sworn duty to see that they do not contract the demoralizing habit of indiscriminate appropriation of private property, particularly slave property, in the loyal State and among the loyal people of Kentucky. They are not here for that purpose...". The letter is signed in type: Q. A. Gillmore, Brig. General. Also on this page is a notice offering a "1,000 Reward" for a runaway "...negro boy named Elliott..." and more, plus an engraving of a runaway.

One column  war heads on pg. 3 include: "From the Army of the Potomac" "Christmas Dinner for Soldiers" "Alarm at Nashville" "Our Loss at Hartsville". There is also a correspondent's report: "From Gen. Rosecran's Army".

The back page has more war news and a "Descriptive List of Deserters from the 22nd Regiment Ky. Vol. Inf."

Four pages, has a large area of damp staining in the lower left corner, & an area of lite damp staining in the upper right corner, some edge wear and a few margin stains, a few archival mends.
