THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, England, November, 1750

* Manis - Asian & African animal w/ print

A very nice pre-Revolutionary War magazine from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.

There is an interesting article on: "A Description of the Manis, an East Indian Animal" which includes a half page print of it (see photo). A following page has: "Various Designs of Wooden Bridges" which includes three prints of them (see photo).

Also: "An Essay on some of the Uses of Natural History, with a special View to Certain Improvements in the British Colonies of North America".

Included is a full page plate titled: "Ironmonger's Hall in Fenchurch Street, London" (see photo). The other plate called for is not present.

Half a page is taken up with: "A True Representation of Palestine".

Other items in this issue include:

* "An History of the Crusades or Holy Wars, from the French of M. Voltaire"
* "The Origin of the Crusades"
* "Islands of Marble -- Lake Lene"
* "Of the Electrick Shock"

* "Dove a Symbol of the Holy Ghost"

Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" which has various news reports from throughout Europe.

Complete in 48 pgs. with full title/index page which contains an engraving of St. John's Gate.  Measures about 5 by 8 inches, two inked library stamps at a bottom margin affect nothing, otherwise very nice condition.
