October 25, 1777
THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, October 25, 1777 An inside page has a report from Venice reading: "The Senate has just published an order by which the Jews are prohibited to farm any of the public taxes whatsoever; to sell meat or any kind of eatables; to carry on any manufactures; to have warehouses or any dwelling house out of the Ghetto, the place allotted to them in Venice"
The same page has reports on the Revolutionary War which include: "...Sir Guy Carleton is to continue at Quebec to take care of the affairs of that province...the French aiding & supplying the Americans with military stores of all kinds...transports belonging to Lord Howe's squadron have arrived there with part of Gen. Howe's army on board..." and another item begins: "Gen. Burgoyne is in possession of Albany. A part of his army, composed of grenadiers & light infantry, had lately an engagement with about 500 rebels who go by the name of the Green Mountain Boys...".
Another page has: "The celebrated Dr. Franklin was born at Boston & not at Phila., where he was bred a printer & set up a business for himself; he printed a newspaper there which he established & conducted with great care; in one of the papers he published was the following epitaph & said to be written by himself: "...The body of Benjamin Franklin, Printer, like a cover of an old book, its contents worn out & stript of its lettering & gilding, lies here, food for the worms; yet the work shall not be lost for it shall ...appear once more in a new & most beautiful edition, corrected & revised by the Author."
Some 13 years later this epitaph would appear on his tombstone.
The back page has a brief item concerning the Revolutionary War. complete in 8 pages, measures 8 1/2 by 11 inches, slight bit of foxing, generally very nice, clean condition.
