THE LONDON CHRONICLE, July 4, 1776

* Greatest date to have (very rare to get)
* Revolutionary war original from the enemy

Forget the content in this issue, this newspaper carries in the masthead the date everyone wants on a newspaper! Actually we've encountered exceedingly few newspapers which carry a date of July 4, 1776. Given that most newspapers of the 18th century were issued weekly, bi-weekly, or tri-weekly, the printed dates usually fell on other than July 4.

All issues of the Chronicle are double-dated as were many newspapers of the day. I always use the latter of the two dates, and in this case the newspaper is dated: "From Tuesday, July 2, to Thursday July 4, 1776" (see photos).  The Chronicle was issued three times a week.
Nearly two-thirds of the ftpg. is an: "Account of the Province of Nova Scotia in North America & Particularly of the town of Halifax, to which Place Gen. Howe & the Army went lately from Boston." Two-thirds of an interior page are taken up with: "Questions And Answers--From Additions to Common Sense, address to the Inhabitants of America, just published." which is concerning the very famous Thomas Paine work (see for portions).

Another news item inside includes: "...advices...received from New York there were upwards of 20,000 Provincial troops in that city. They were in expectation of a visit from the government forces, & in case those forces should make good their landing, the Provincials were instantly to fire the town..." with a bit more. Other war-related items in this issue as well including a short bkpg. item noting: "...a party of Provincial Militia, on their march to joining General Arnold, were cut off by a large party of Indians."

Complete in 8 pages, measures 8 1/2 by 11 inches, just a slight bit of smudging to the front page, otherwise in very nice, clean condition.
