THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, April 28, 1770
* The Boston Massacre
* An excellent & detailed account
Just a few days later than the first report on the Boston Massacre, this issue has an inside page which is headed: "The following is the Substance of a letter from Boston, dated the 12th of March, relative to the unhappy affair between the Townsmen & the Soldiers on the 5th of that Month.
With much nice prefacing text, there is a very detailed & exacting account headed" "Case of Capt. Thomas Preston of the 29th Regiment", wherein is an excellent account of the actual Boston Massacre, with much on what lead up to it and some comments on the aftermath. Very detailed--see photos for the full report.
This account takes over a full page, a portion of which includes: "...About nine some of the guard came to & informed me the town inhabitants were assembling to attack the troops...I saw the people in great commotion & heard them use the most cruel & horrid threats against the troops...They immediately surrounded the centinel posted there & with clubs & other weapons threatened to execute their vengeance on him...The mob still increased & were more outrageous...calling out, 'come on, you rascals, you Bloody backs, you Lobster Scoundrels; fire if you dare; G-- damn you, fire & be damned......Instantly three or four of the soldiers fired...The mob then ran away, except three unhappy men who instantly expired..." with so much more. Just a terrific eye-witness account of the Boston Massacre.
Complete in 8 pages and in very nice, clean condition, measuring 8 1/2 by 11 inches. There is a lightly inked portion in the third column (I penciled in the letters so as to not deter readability; easily erased if wanted) in the massacre text (see), otherwise very nice.
