April 10, 1781
THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, April 10, 1781 Pg. 2 contains a letter headed: "A Letter from Gen. Arnold to the Commander of the Rebel Land Forces in Virginia dated on Board his Majesty's ship the Hope", signed in type: Benedict Arnold, B.G. It is uncommon to find letters signed in type by the infamous Arnold, this one from after his treasonous desertion of the American cause (see).
Another page has: "Extracts from the Dispatches of Mons. LeCount De Rochambeau, Commander in Chief of the French Army in America, dated Rhode Island, Feb. 6..." which takes a full column & has much on the war, including: "...received a letter from Gen. Washington requesting I would send him a detachment of 2000 men...The American army are very unprepared for the severity of the season...The attachment of their army that were encamped in the rear of my lines I have sent to Gen. Washington..." and there is also a list of: "...the sick, dead & deserted of the army under my command since the 30th day of October, 1780" (see).
Yet another pg. has a letter from South Carolina which begins: "Our last advices from Lord Cornwallis are of the 9th...he was then at Salem on the banks of Deep River. Greene had been fairly out-witted..." with more (see).
Close to half of the bkpg. is taken up with American reports, some seen in the photos below.
Complete in 8 pgs., very nice condition.
