THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, April, 1731 This was the very first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, and also the very first general interest magazine in the world--and this is from the very first year of its existence.  This title began in 1731 and ran through 1907.
Among the 40 pages in this issue are articles: "Of the British Sugar Colonies in America" which takes three-quarters of a page; "Of Disrespect to the Clergy" "Female Extravagance" "Apology for Pawn Brokers" "The History of Patriotism" and much more, plus the last several pages have the "Monthly Intelligencer" with current news from Europe. Do note this is the Fifth Edition, likely done in 1732 or 1733. I have seen as many as 7 editions from this first year, needing to be republished to fill runs as the magazine became very successful in subsequent years. The content & the look are virtually identical to the first editions, and indeed, first editions of 1731 are very rarely found. Measures 5  by 8 inches, complete with the title/index page which features an engraving of St. John's Gate, very nice, clean condition. At this early date there were no maps or plates in Gentleman's Magazine.
