January 08, 1780
THE EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, Jan. 8, 1780  Pg. 2 contains a report on John Paul Jones from shortly after his historic naval battle, which includes: "Paul Jones sailed out of the Texel for France last Monday...Jones has left his prisoners, to the number of 500, on board a Dutch man of war in the Texel, to be exchanged...few days before Paul Jones sailed from the Texel, he performed an action which marked in the strongest manner his sanguinary character..." with more. Period mentions of John Paul Jones are difficult to find. Pg. 2 also has some war reports including a French letter mentioning the terrible condition of the American soldiers in the South, with: "...I was ashamed to see the army of our allies; the poor creatures were in such condition many of the privates were half naked; some even without shoes...". Also: "...Mr. Adams is now empowered by Congress to propose terms to this country...Congress have deputed Mr. Adams to cooperate with those powers & conclude a peace with Great Britain on the ground of Independence." Pg. 3 has a report on the siege of Savannah, which includes: "Our besiegers amounted to 4000 French & 2500 Americans. For the last seven days of the siege a constant fire was kept up on both sides..." with more (see photos). Complete in 4 pgs., dirtiness to the top quadrant of the ftpg. only, otherwise very nice.
