THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, June, 1785

* From just after  the Revolutionary War
* John Adams arrives in England as ambassador, meets with the King

A nice magazine from the "mother country" from not long after the end of the Revolutionary War with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.

Under the "Historical Chronicle" section of this issue is a report with a "Wednesday, June 1" heading which begins: "This day John Adams, esq., minister plenipotentiary from the United States of America, had a private audience of his majesty, to deliver his credentials. This day Col. Smith, late aid de-camp to Gen. Washington, arrived in character of secretary to his excellency John Adams, esq. ambassador & plenipotentiary from the United States of America to the court of Great Britain."
Another article includes content concerning the caves of Elephanta Island (one of a number of islands in Mumbai Harbour, east of Mumbai, India).
Other interesting articles as noted in the table of contents include:
"Dr. Priestley's Address to recover a lost Ms." "Letter from Dr. Johnson to Gov. Hastings" "Epitaph for Dr. Johnson's intended Monument" "Scrictures on the Learned Pig"  and more.

The full back page is a chart headed: "Each Day's Price of Stocks in June, 1785".

This issue is complete with both plates called for, one of which is a foldout titled: "View near Lichfield, Including a most Remarkably large Willow Tree" and the other being a plate of miscellaneous items of antiquity.

Complete in 84 pgs. with full title/index page which contains an engraving of St. John's Gate. Slightly close-trimmed at the right edge of the  titlepg. only, measures 5 by 8 inches, small binding holes at the blank spine margin, otherwise nice & very clean.
