THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, January, 1759

* 18th century detailed map of Germany

A very nice French & Indian War era magazine from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.

Near the back is nearly a full page of reports concerning the French & Indian War, including a: "Letter from Oneida Carrying Place" which begins:
"The grand sachem of the Oneida Indians was with us at the taking of Frontignac; he was one of the most Christian Indians I ever saw, constantly at prayers...before he got half a mile from our encampment he was shot dead..." plus a "Letter from New Jersey" with some text re. the Indians, plus a letter from "Pittsburgh (formerly Fort du Quesne), Nov. 28" includes: "The day is arrived that has at last fixed us on the banks of the Ohio! the finest & most fertile country of America, lying in the happiest climate in the universe..." with more.

Also a letter from "New York, Nov. 20" Plus another report being a letter from General Forbes dated from Fort DuQuesne (see photos). Perhaps the best portion of the issue is the large foldout map titled:

"A Compleat Map of Germany Comprehending in one View the Different Seats of the Present War. 1759" with some incredible detail.

The map shows from the "German Ocean" with a portion of England, to a portion of Denmark, the Baltic Sea, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, the Gulf of Venice, Geneva, and so much more in between. Very detailed with hundreds of towns and rivers noted. The map measures about 12 by 14 in. from edge to edge.
A curious article is headed: "Descrip. of a rare American  Quadrupede" which is very descriptive, taking almost an entire pg. (see photos for portions). What animal is this?
One of the pages contains an engraving of an ancient relic (see)

Among other articles in this issue as noted in the table of Contents are:
"Description of the Famous Pantheon at Rome" "Absurdity of Imprisoning for Debt" "Account of a Most Magnificent Festival celebrated in China" and much more.

Both the issue & the map are in great condition. The issue includes 48 pgs. with full title/index page & measures about 5 by 8 in.
