THOMAS'S MASSACHUSETTS SPY, OR WORCESTER GAZETTE, August 5, 1784.
* Rare Paul Revere masthead engraving
* Charles Thomson
* John Hancock & Samuel Adams
The masthead was engraved by Paul Revere and is quite decorative, featuring medallion-like devices on either side and very ornate, flowery lettering in the title (see photos). Fully half of the front page is taken up with: "Extract from the Journal of Congress" and "By the United States in Congress Assembled", being political reports from this period between the end of the Revolutionary War and the formal establishment of our federal government.
This issue was published more than 3 years before the creation of the Constitution of the United States.
Page 2 includes various news of the day including a continuation of Congressional reports, signed in type: Charles Thomson.
Also included is a report on the graduation ceremonies of Harvard University including a list of those receiving degrees.
Page 3 includes a report from Annapolis: "By the United States in Congress" concerning the creation of "...a body of troops to consist of 700 men...for taking possession of the western posts, as soon as evacuated by the troops of his Britannick Majesty..." (see photos).
The back page includes a document from the "Massachusetts Senate" signed in type by both: S. Adams, President, and John Hancock (see photos).
Complete in 4 pages, some minor foxing, generally in very nice condition. A very displayable issue given the handsome Paul Revere engraving in the masthead.
