November 18, 1848
THE FLORIDIAN, Tallahassee, Florida, November 18, 1848

This issue from Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, includes many articles as well as advertisements:  "Taylor's Letters Boiled Down",  "Presidential Election", "Great Robbery at Washington City", "The Mormon Temple", "Native Americanism", and much more.

Page one has a list of excerpts from supposed letters written by (now) President Zachary Taylor showing his vacillating viewpoints on everything from the slavery issue to whether he saw himself as a moderate or radical to his opinion of Henry Clay.  Page 2 includes additional election coverage, which is quite unfavorable to Taylor and Filmore, and a brief mention of the remains of the Mormon temple at Nauvoo being purchased with the intention of having it rebuilt.

Nineteenth century newspapers from Florida are uncommon, particularly rare are those from before the Civil War. Here is such an issue from the capital city of Florida, and from over 13 years before the outbreak of the Civil War. The format is typical of most newspapers of the day, being four pages of folio size with a wealth of news of the day and many advertisements as well.  This issue is complete, and in good condition.
