January 21, 1778
THE PENNSYLVANIA LEDGER OR THE PHILADELPHIA MARKET-DAY ADVERTISER, Jan. 21, 1778 This was a strongly Tory (supportive of the British cause) newspaper which began in 1775 and closed shop in May of 1778 when the British evacuated Philadelphia.
The first column of the ftpg. includes: "By Order of His Excellency Sir William Howe, General & Commander in Chief...PROCLAMATION" concerning keeping the streets of Philadelphia clean (see). There are also two additional "Proclamations" by Sir William Howe (see). The ftpg. also has a great letter datelined "New York, Nov. 20, 1777" which includes: "Mr. Washington's letter to Congress, dated from camp near Penibacker's Mill, Oct. 5, 1777 is perhaps the most extravagant piece of Jesuistical quakery that has been exhibited during the present rebellion. This heroic epistle abounds in deception...' with much more, carrying over to pg. 2 (see photos). Pg. 2 includes a bit noting: "...there are a number of letters received that confirm our accounts of the defeat of Washington and that Gen. Howe has got entire possession of Philadelphia." Also on pg. is a bit noting: "...our French neighbours have been zealous supporters of the American Rebels since the commencement of their unnatural defection from the authority of the parent state...". Pg. 3 has several ads but also has over a half column "Proclamation" from Sir William Howe (see photos). Four pgs., folio size, archivally rejoined at the spine, loss to the bottom line of pg. 2 does not affecting any mentioned reports. Various foxing & staining, mainly near the edge, but none causing loss of readability.
Not surprisingly, being a Tory newspaper the masthead features an engraving of the Royal coat-of-arms.
