January 22, 1862
THE DAILY DELTA, New Orleans, Louisiana, Jan. 22, 1862  Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.
The front page includes a mixture of ads and news, one of the ads is headed: "Negroes For Sale" with a bit of text and two small engravings (see). There is a similar ad on pg. 3 as well. The ftpg. also has: "From the Seat of War In Virginia" and "What the Morning Journals Say" which contains some war-related reports. Also: "A Venerable Hero" and other news tidbits. But perhaps the most interesting ftpg. item is: "Description of the Merrimac" or referred to as "...the Norfolk Turtle..." which has some nice text on this novel, new water craft, and very early as well, being nearly two months before it would become famous in the naval battle against the Yankee's Monitor.
Page 2 includes: "Women & Children Leaving New Bern" "125 Federal Vessels at Hatteras" "Newbern to be Attacked" "Veto of the Cotton Relief Bill". Some smaller heads include "The War In Kentucky" "From Matamoros" "From Fort Henry" and more. There also nearly a column of "General Orders" concerning the military.  Pg. 3 has both news and ads with the same on pg. 4.  Complete in 4 pgs., even browning throughout, a bit irregular at the spine from disbinding, generally very nice condition.
