May 18, 1813
THE WAR, New York, May 18, 1813.
* Battle of York (Toronto, Canada)
* War of 1812 original
* General Zebulon Pike death
Here is a fascinating newspaper which started in 1812 and ended at the conclusion of the War of 1812. The expressed purpose of this newspaper was to report events of the War of 1812, and almost all text on all 4 pages deals exclusively with just that.
The entire front page is taken up with the:
* Official Account of the Capture of York--Copies of Letters from Major-General Dearborn to the secretary at War
This was a very significant battle in the attempt to take control of Lake Ontario. The Americans set afire many of the government buildings, which was the motivation for the British to burn Washington in 1814.
York is present-day Toronto. Included are the "Terms of Capitulation" which carry over to page 2.
Inside page reports include those headed: "General Pike" who was killed in this battle for York; "American Prisoners in Jamaica" "Escape from a British Prison" "Further Depredations--Fredericktown & Georgetown burnt" "Harrison's Army" "Summary" and more, with additional news items on the back page as well.
Four pgs., measures 9 1/4by 11 1/2 in., some scattered foxing, generally very nice.
