June 25, 1861
NEW ORLEANS DAILY CRESCENT, Louisiana, June 25, 1861

* Rare Confederate newspaper before Yankee occupation
* Lincoln Deserters

Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.
Most of the ftpg. has various news reports along with a full column of "Military Notices" (see). Among the ftpg. items are those headed: "A Card to Gen. Scott" "The Latest War Intelligence--Blockade of Mississippi Sound--Latest from Fortress Monroe--A Traitor in the Northern Ranks--Jim Lane's Brigade" "The War in Missouri" "Naval Engagement" "Driving Back the Invaders" "Lincoln's Deserters" "Rio Grande Correspondence" and more. Pg. 2 has more war reports along with ads, one of which is rather lengthy and is headed: "Southern Pacific Railroad--1,000 Slaves Wanted by Hire or by Purchase." with lengthy details (see). Pg. 3 is entirely taken up with ads including: "Negroes For Sale" and "Spring & Summer arrangement. My slave depot...will remain open...for receiving, forwarding & selling slaves on commission..." with more (see). Most of the bkpg. is taken up with ads including many illustrated "Steamboat" ads. Complete in 4 pages, folio size, a bit irregular at the spine margin but causing no loss of text, generally nice. A fine opportunity for a rare Confederate title.
