A pg. 3 article titled: "California Gold at the Mint" tells about the rare California gold coins, with the text reading:
"We understand that the amount of California gold deposited at the mint of Philadelphia for coinage up to Wednesday last was $58,522. The only coinage of California gold is in quarter eagles, and amounts to $6,897.50 Of these,the pieces transmitted to John Y. Mason, esq., the Secreatary of the Navy, were marked with the letters 'Cal.' over the head of the eagle. The other pieces,was a few exceptions, had no distincitive mark."
