THE NEW-YORK TIMES, Oct. 7, 1868  The inset shows the front page report from Atlanta, Ga. concerning a Georgia legislator named Beard who was expelled from his seat after a full investigation determined that he had ...in his veins more than one-eighth negro blood. The report continues stating that: ... a resolution was offered that Beard be declared ineligible to a seat; which was adopted. There is a related item under: "Georgia The Ejection of Colored Members From the Legislature--An Appeal to Congress for Redress" that contains an appeal from the Republican members of the Georgia Legislature asking Congress to make an inquiry into this situation, but also that their Democratic opponents in the race "...have been seated in place of the colored men..". They also express concern about a law passed by the Legislature denying colored men the right to sit on a jury. The appeal is signed in type by B. Conley, the President of the Senate, and three other individuals.
