THE FLORIDIAN, Tallahassee, February 26, 1848 Nineteenth century
newspapers from Florida are uncommon, particularly rare are those from
before the Civil War. Here is such an issue from the capital city of
Florida, and from over 13 years before the outbreak of the Civil War.
Page two has nearly a full column headed: "Important News From Mexico"
with some of the text including:
"...We hear further that the
preliminaries of the treaty of peace were signed on the first day of
February by the Mexican government...By the terms of this treaty we
understand that the United States obtain the boundary of the Rio
Grande, New Mexico and Upper California..." with more. Yet
another column on pg. 2 is headed: "Mexican Affairs--The Treaty Of
Peace" which does not confirm the particulars but rather gives several
instances of having received some details (see photos). Also on the
inside pages are: "Rumors of Peace" "Old Joe, the Indian Chief" "Ten
Regiment Bill & the Pesidency" "Doings in Congress" and more,
including an article headed: "Mormon Fanticism" which includes:
"...a gentleman of Boston had
obtained a divorce from his wife in consequence of her becoming a
Mormon...obtained a divorce from his wife as she had deserted him to
become the 'spiritual wife of a Mormon.' She was a woman of high
endowments, accomplishments even...whose only failing was that she had
allowed herself to be captivated by the ridiculous phantasies of the
Mormon prophet.". The bkpg. is entirely taken up with ads
including those headed: "Negro Kerseys" and "Negro Clothing" among
others. Complete in 4 pages, folio size, slightly irregular at the
blank spine margin, generally in very nice, clean condition. A
very desirable and early newspaper from Florida.
