THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, May, 1753  This issue begins with: "Some Account of the New Roads in Surry from Westminster Bridge". There is also a full page plate showing 28 "Reliques at the Church of Notre Dame at Aix la Chapelle" with a related article (see).
A full page is taken up with "A View & Description of the Village of Portici" in Italy, beneath which were found the foundations of the city of Herculaneum. Includes an engraving of the town (see). Other items include: "Description of Lapland" which takes over 2 1/2 pages; "Methods of Inoculation" "An Account of the Pearl Fishery at Panama" which notes: "...The masters of the Negroes choose for the fishery those who are good swimmers and well breath'd...18 or 20 Negroes under the direction of an overseer..." with more. Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" with the latest news reports of the day.
Lacking one of the plates called for.
Complete in 48 pages, 5 by 8 inches, full title/contents page with an engraving of St. John's Gate.

A very nice magazine from before the French & Indian War with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
