LONDON CHRONICLE, England, August 6, 1789

* Judaica - Jewish
* Wearing of the beards

News on the fifth page includes an interesting report about the wearing of beards among the Jewish men in Denmark stating: "They write from Copenhagen, that a difference of opinion among the Jews there concerning the duty of wearing their beards, has been carried to a great length as to occasion an application to the Government of the country for Permission to the High Priest and Rulers to excommunicate and deprive of the privileges of their society such members, without regard to their rank, as would not comply with the law of Moses. In consequence of their application [the] Government invested them with authority, and those members who cut off their beards, were called up in public in the Synagogues, and acknowledged their fault before God and man. The whole community...have now become uniform. A strict discipline was exercised before some of the rich families, who, having adopted atheistical principles, were persuaded to submit to the law"
