THE EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, May 1, 1780

* Revolutionary war from the enemy
* South Carolina

Page 2 has a nice letter from the New York Mercury newspaper which begins: "Last Tuesday night a party of the British troops embarked at Spithim Devil...& proceeded 12 miles up the North River...& surprised a body of the rebel troops...the troops returned to their post at King's Bridge yesterday...on Wed. evening a detachment of the royal army under the command of Col. Howard crossed from this city to the Jerseys & proceeded to Hackensack..." plus a great deal more Revolutionary War reporting (see photos).
There is another half column article headed: "Extract of a letter from a gentleman in South Carolina dated at a rebel house six miles from Charleston" which also has a great wealth of reporting, too much for me to list here (see the photos).

There is further war reporting on page 3, including: "...Sir Henry was preparing to pass Ashley River with a view to make himself master of the peninsula leading to Charleston...expected that the conquest of Charleston itself would prove a very easy or a very speedy measures. The American army in Charlestown amounts to 5000 active men...every effort having been made through Carolina on the part of the colonists for an immediate levy of recruits..." and another item has "...last accounts came from Sir Henry Clinton thither, he had fairly invested Charlestown & was near opening his batteries...though the rebels had collected their southern strength there with a resolution to defend it..." with more (see photos).

Some fine reading on the war's Southern campaign in this issue. Complete in 4 pgs., folio size, some rubbing at folds, a very small hole in the front leaf, some minor rubbing.
