November 05, 1864
THE NEW SOUTH,Port Royal, South Carolina, November 5, 1864
* Lincoln's letter to General Sheridan
* signed in type by Lincoln
This newspaper was established in March of 1862 after its capture by Union forces during the early part of the Civil War. Issued in a "military command", the newspaper sought to provide mostly military reports and other items, but no political news for the soldiers, so as not to distract them from their mission which was the suppression of the Rebellion. It is also interesting that a Union newspaper was published in South Carolina considering the state remained a Confederate stronghold until near the end of the war.
This issue has some interesting war-related content on pages 2 & 3, including: "Northern News From Petersburg" "900 Prisoners & 7 Wagon Trains Captured" "The Rebel General Deering Killed" "The War In Missouri" "President Lincoln's Letter to Gen. Sheridan" signed by him in type: Abraham Lincoln. Also: "Col. Dahlgren" & "The Vermont Raiders" "Further Particulars of the Arrest of the Raiders" "Foraging Expedition" and other items.
There is some foxing to the folds and top margin of the front leaf, and the two leaves are mostly separated at the spine but causing no loss of text. A lightly-inked library stamp near the upper right corner.
