The Somers was doing blockade duty off the coast of Vera Cruz in the Mexican War when it sunk. The various letters & correspondences take one-third of page 2,plus there is a related article on page 3: "Loss of the Somers--Noble Conduct of her Officers and Seamen..." The Somers was more well known for being the only U.S. Navy ship to undergo a mutiny (1842) which resulted in executions. There are also a few reports on the progress of the Mexican War.
