DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Richmond, Virginia, May 30, 1862
* General Benjamin 'Beast' Butler in Orleans
* Rare Confederate title from the rebel capital
Not just a nice Confederate newspaper, but one from the capital of the Confederacy, through which all important war information flowed.
The front page includes: "The Lines About Richmond" 'The Potomac Crossed" "The Suffering Wounded" "Military Display on the Square" "Cheering Indications" "Coming Through the Yankee Lines" which is a full column; "Good Work" "Movements And Spirit of the War" which has subheads: "Later from New Orleans--The City Under Butler's Despotism--Newspapers Suppressed..." which includes three of Butler's "General Orders". Also on the ftpg: "The Yankee 'Victories' " "The Yankees Off the Florida Coast--More of them 'Bagged' "Later From Vicksburg..." "Running the Blockade" and other items.
The back page continues with war-related text and features the always interesting editorial, beginning: "No room for doubt now remains. A terrible battle is about to be fought by the largest armies ever assembled on the American continent...That it will be obstinate & sanguinary beyond parallel is equally certain..." with much more on the implications of an impending battle. This would be the battle of Fair Oaks (or Seven Pines). The bkpg. has much discussion on the Civil War in Europe, particularly in England, with several war-related subheads (see).
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a banner masthead. In uncommonly nice, clean condition.
