Item # 670092

March 17, 1690

THE ATHENIAN GAZETTE, "Resolving Weekly all the most Nice and Curious Question Propos'd by the Ingenious", London, England, March 17, 1690  This was the very first issue of a fine gentleman's newspaper which was very popular in the coffeehouses of early England, done in question & answer format. One question: "Whether 'tis lawful for a man to beat his wife?"
Only a few issues would be printed with this title, as it would soon be renamed "The Athenian Mercury".
A single sheet newspaper printed on both sides (typical for the period), 7 1/4 by 12 1/4 inches, nice condition. However, note that it is close-trimmed at the top and bottom causing partial loss to the "number 1" at the top, and the imprint on the bkpg., and the top line of the bkpg.
