THE WORLD, New York, July 9, 1876 A great issue on several accounts, notably a fine front page report on the James-Younger Gang train robbery at Otterville, plus fine content concerning Custer & the Indians,, including mention of Wild Bill Hickok.
The front page begins with a two-thirds column report of the infamous Otterville train robbery committed by the James-Younger gang of outlaws. The report is headed: "DARING ROBBERY" "A Railroad Train Sacked In Missouri" "Armed Men Scouring the Country In Pursuit of the Robbers". The report is very detailed, and ends with: "...entire country...will be thoroughly scoured, & from the well-known characters of the men sent out there is a good prospect at least that some of the miscreants will be captured. All the robbers wore masks while at the train, & none of them...were recognized...".
The front page also has much headed: "THE INDIAN QUESTION" "A Council of War Held in Washington" "Reinforcements of Infantry & Cavalry Hastening to the Front" with various subheads including: "General Crook's Expedition" with mention of Custer; "Sheridan's Opinion of the Situation" and more.
Three-quarters of page 6 are taken up with: "CUSTER AS AN AUTHOR" "His Life On The Plains and War Memoirs" "The Battle of Washita" and more. Within this report, which references much is recent book "My Life On The Plains" written in 1874, is mention of Wild Bill (Hickok).
Complete in 8 pages, nice condition.
