NEW YORK TIMES, Jan. 5, 1863

* Abraham Lincoln rescinds
* General Order No. 11 (1862)
* Expelling all Jews - Jewish
* Issued by Ulysses S. Grant

Certainly the most notable content is the rather inconspicuous item on page 5 wherein President Lincoln rescinded Grant's General Order 11 to expel all Jews from his military district of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi. This Grant directive, issued on Dec. 11, 1862, is regarded as one of the most blatant anti-Semitic actions of the 19th century.
This page 5 report notes the order was revoked, mentioning: "The action of Gen. Grant, in ordering all Israelites out of his Department, was too-day reversed by Gen. Halleck at the instance of the President. The 'Jewish persuasion' throughout the West...were greatly excited and exasperated at the order, and were organizing large delegation to visit Washington for the purpose of having it rescinded. In view of this threatened visitation, the President's action was undoubtedly relieved him from a serious affliction."." with more.
Although insignificant by comparison, the front page has many war reports including good content on the Battle of: "MURFEESBORO" "Continued Accounts of the Terrific Struggle on Stone River" "The Rebel Army Reported to be Decidedly Whipped" "Details of the Fighting of Thursday & Friday" as well as: "Vicksburg" "Important fro Arkansas" "Loss of the Famous Monitor" and much more.
Eight pages, some minor margin wear, good condition.

Note: A trio of similar issues with the Order #11, and another from 1868, sold at a Sotheby auction for $9,375.
