April 12, 1865

LEWISTOWN GAZETTE, Pennsylvania, April 12, 1865  Being a weekly newspaper (and a rare title as well) this is a first report of the surrender of Robert E. Lee to U.S. Grant.
The top of page 2 has a column beginning with a patriotic graphic & heads: "VICTORY!!" "Death-Blow to Treason" "Surrender of Lee And His Whole Army" which is followed by 14 dispatches signed by: U.S. Grant, R.E. Lee and E. M. Stanton as Secretary of War. The dispatches detail the progress of the surrender terms, with the final one by Stanton including: "That a salute of 200 guns be fired at the hqts. of every army...in commemoration of the surrender of Gen. R. E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia to Lieut. Gen. Grant...". Also the last from Robert E. Lee includes: "...received your letter...containing the terms of surrender...as proposed by you...they are accepted. I will proceed to designate the proper officers to carry the stipulations into effect...".
There are also two nice editorial on page 2 both dealing with the end of the war. One begins: "We have the proud satisfaction of announcing to our readers this week, the glorious intelligence that Gen. R. E. Lee has surrendered the army of Northern Virginia to Lieut. General U.S. Grant on the latter's own terms. This is glorious intelligence & will thrill the heart of every patriot with job. The rebellion is virtually ended...".
The bottom of pg. 2 has a political note: "Had George B. McClellan been elected...we would have had a compromise & disgraceful peace with the traitor. How thankful to Providence we should be for the re-election of Abraham Lincoln...".
Four pages, never bound, nice condition.
