DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, May 14, 1863 Not just a Confederate newspaper, but from the capital of the Confederacy. There is much front page news concerning the Civil War with items headed: "The News--Movements of The Enemy" "The Wounded In The Late Battles" and "From Fredericksburg" is very lengthy and detailed on the battles in that vicinity taking over half a column and the top of the next column having more with: "Latest News From The North" "The Battles About Fredericksburg--What Is Thought & Said of Them--Review of the Week's Operations--Hooker's Defeat Admitted--Stories, Rumors and Speculations in the North". Plus there are more smaller heads including; "The Yankee Account of the Panic in Richmond Over Stoneman's Cavalry Raid" "The Retreat of Hooker's Army" "Specimens of Yankee Lying" "The Panic & Flight of the Eleventh Corps" and more.
The war reporting carries over to the back page as well, including a lengthy editorial on the war, a portion of which reflects upon the recent death of Stonewall Jackson, beginning: "All the poor honours that Virginia, sorely troubled & pressed hard, could afford her most glorious and beloved son, having been offered to his mortal part of this capital, the funeral cortege of the famous Jackson left it yesterday morning on the long road to 'Lexington, in the Valley of Virginia'..." with more, including a biography of his life & military career (see). This report on Jackson takes over 1 1/2 columns, and great to have from the city where his funeral was held just the day before, May 13.
Also on the bkpg. is a short report with small head: "The New Flag" which notes: "The new standard of the Confederate States...In dimensions the flag is eighteen feet by twenty-four. A number of persons were present & watched the flag as its folds were given to the breeze..." (see).
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a full banner masthead. A crease in the top half of the ftpg. distracts but causes no loss of text or readability. And the upper right corner was folded over when printed causing a white space, and an over-print on page 2. Otherwise in great condition.
