Not only a nice newspaper from the Confederacy but one from its capital. This is a particularly significant issue as there is good content on the Battle of Chancellorsville, a significant victory for the Confederate forces although it came at a price--the death of "Stonewall" Jackson. He would actually die 8 days after the battle (from friendly fire no less), but the top of the front page reports his injury under the heading; "From Fredericksburg" which reads in part: "...After an obstinate fight General Early repulsed the enemy...While at the headquarters he heard some of Gen. Jackson's staff say that his wound was in the left arm above the elbow, and might prove very dangerous unless amputation was resorted to. It will be gratifying to the many friends & admirers of General Jackson to know that he is in skillful hands..." (see).
This is followed by two columns of text on the battle, with much detail and many subheads. Further on the front page is a report headed: "Great Victory At Chancellorsville ! " which is a dispatch to President Davis signed in type by: Robert E. Lee, & with subheads: "Enemy Retreating Across the Rappahannock--General Paxton Killed--Generals Jackson, Heth and A. P. Hill, Wounded--Official Dispatch From General Lee".
The bkpg. includes the always interesting editorial which addresses, in part, the action at Chancellorsville, and also has a portion beginning: "The North have discovered from this war the value of slavery to the South as a military institution; and the proclamations of Lincoln have been designed to destroy that power in our hands..." with much more (see for portions). Additionally, the back page has: "Capture of the 'Rebel' Schooner Alabama..." "Latest News From The North" "A Strange Record" and a lengthy: "Official Report of Admiral Porter of Running the Batteries at Vicksburg" plus other items.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a full banner masthead, very nice, clean condition.
