DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, Jan. 16, 1862 Not only a newspaper from the Confederacy, but from it's capital, hence a great source of war-related news as all reports eventually found their way to Richmond.
Half of the front page is headed: "Notes Of The War" taking 3 columns & containing subheads such as: "The Federal Army In Kentucky--Great Demoralization--Extraordinary Confessions of the Enemy" "Rev. Henry Ward Beecher on the War--What He Thinks the People Should Do" "Prospect of a Fight at Bowling Green, Ky." "Effect of the War on the Northwest" "Serious Charges Against Wisconsin Colonels" "The Western Flotilla Off Cairo" & a bit more carrying over to pg. 2.
Much of pg. 2 is taken up with war news including: "The 36th Virginia Regiment" "The Post-Office Deficiency" "Movements and Spirit of The War" "Western Virginia" "The Battle In Kentucky" "Government Premiums" plus there is much reporting from the: "Legislature Of Virginia" with many military related discussions. Pg. 2 also has the always interesting editorial, which includes: "For a period uncertain in duration...the season commands a truce. This is the true winter...The campaign has been strictly defensive. We have gained nothing, for we have attempted no gain. That we have lost comparatively little of actual territory during the latter six months is due only to the difficulties of invasion in a country like this...There is now but one chance of escape from the net that has been coolly drawn around us; it is to concentrate our energy on one point & cut it through...At present General Johnston confronts superior forces of the enemy under Buell..." plus so much more on the strategy of war (see for portions).
Over half of the back page is taken up with many Acts from the Confederate Congress. Complete in 4 pages, never bound nor trimmed, and in nice condition.
