A Confederate newspaper from its capital city of Richmond. Obviously the Civil War reporting has a bias towards the Confederate cause.
Among the front page items are: "From General Lee's Army --Yankee Movement In The Valley" "The Richmond Post Office" "North Carolina and The War--The Voice of Her Soldiers", items datelined: "Camp Near Raccoon Ford, Culpepper Country, Virginia" and "Camp Near Fredericksburg, Va." among other items.
There is more war-related reporting on the back page including: "Latest News From The North" "From the Army In Virginia" "Military Strength of the Confederate States" which includes a charge of soldiers by age; "The Latest from Charleston--Operations Before Charleston--Furious Attack on Fort Sumter--The Walls Give Way Under the Terrific Fire--Threat to Shell Charleston..." "Still Later From the North" and other items.
Included on the bkpg. is an editorial beginning: "The enemy have demanded the surrender of Sumter and Wagner, which they cannot take, with a menace of throwing shells among women and children who remain in the city of Charleston..." and more.
This is a single sheet newspaper as was typical of Confederate newspapers from later in the war, as most of the paper mills were in the North. The issue has several folds and is wrinkled near the middle portion. These items cause no loss of readability once pressed out. There is some light rubbing and soiling to the front page which detract but cause no loss. A few quite small holes near the bottom. There is red pencil numeral above the masthead likely from some institutional accession procedure by a previous owner.
