Prophetic comments on the value of California... Before the Gold Rush...

Item # 666232

July 29, 1847

THE DAILY UNION, City of Washington, July 29, 1847  Inside has reports from the Mexican War with: "The Prisoners of Encarnacion" "Deeply Interesting Narrative of the Capture, Adventures, and Sufferings of Majors Gaines and Borland's Party in Mexico" which takes over 2 1/2 columns.
Perhaps most interesting is: "California" which includes: "...This country presents many attractions. Its harbors are amongst the most spacious in the world. Its soil is productive; and its climate is so pure & healthy...". Also: "Mills's Route to the Pacific" is great reading on Westward expansion as well.
Four pages, some light damp staining, generally nice.

Item from Catalog 295 (released for June, 2020)...
