October 04, 1862

LOS ANGELES STAR, California, Oct. 4, 1862

* Emancipation Proclamation
* President Abraham Lincoln
* Rare Southern California title

Quite rare to find Civil War era newspapers from Los Angeles, which at the time had a population of less than 5,000.
But the content is not just typical war-related reports. Page 2 begins with: "The President's Proclamation" which doesn't just have the full text of his historic document, but is prefaced with a quite lengthy editorial beginning: "Below, we give the proclamation lately issued by the President, declaring the slaves of the South free after the 1st of January next..." and so much more.
Following this is the actual text of the Proclamation, which includes: "...That on the 1st day of January, 1863, all persons held as slaves within any state or part of the state, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be thenceforth and forever after free...".
Four pages, a minor archival mend on page 2, slightly irregular at the blank spine, good condition.
