First issue of this territorial newspaper we've encountered...

Item # 665760

October 31, 1885

THE DILLON TRIBUNE, Beaverhead County, M.T. (Montana Territory), Oct. 31, 1885  A quite rare newspaper, in fact the first of this title we have ever encountered. This is a territorial newspaper as Montana did not become a state until 1889.
Dillon was founded in the Beaverhead Valley as a railroad town in 1880 by Union Pacific Railroad President Sidney Dillon. The town's location was selected by the railroad because of its proximity to gold mines in the area.
A typical newspaper of the day with a wealth of local reporting and local ads. This issue was never bound nor trimmed so it is still attached at the top, folding our to a large single sheet. Note that nearly one-quarter of the 2nd leaf has been clipped out.
Eight pages, foxing at ftpg. folds, various archival mends at the folds on inside pages.
