May 23, 1862

THE LIBERATOR, Boston, May 23, 1862

* Rare anti-slavery title
* Hunter's emancipation order

This is the famous anti-slavery newspaper by famed abolitionist publisher William Lloyd Garrison. The masthead features two engravings, one of a slave auction and the other showing slaves being emancipated.
Page 3 has nice reporting concerning the General David Hunter "emancipation" controversy, in which he issued an emancipation proclamation for selected states without authority. The proclamation is printed here & signed in type: David Hunter, Major General Commanding.
This issue includes the document signed in type by the President: Abraham Lincoln, negating Hunter's proclamation. There is also a lengthy editorial on this situation: "President Lincoln's Veto of Gen. Hunter's Emancipation Order" (small worm hole here affects just 2 letters) and another: "General Hunter's Order".
Other interesting reports in this issue include: "The Colored Population of the District of Columbia" "Rejoicing Over the Abolition of Slavery in the District of Columbia" "Emancipation Jubilee--Celebration by the Colored People of New York" "The Negroes of Port Royal" "Enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Law in the District" and much more.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, good condition.
