* 1st ever woman to do so - jet airplane

The top of page 32 has a one column heading: "MISS COCHRAN TOPS THE SPEED OF SOUND" with subhead and photo of Cochran. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete with all 60 pages, rag edition in nice condition.

wikipedia notes: Encouraged by then-Major Chuck Yeager, with whom Cochran shared a lifelong friendship, on May 18, 1953, at Rogers Dry Lake, California, Cochran flew a Canadair F-86 Sabre jet borrowed from the Royal Canadian Air Force at an average speed of 652.337 mph. During the course of this run the Sabre went supersonic, and Cochran became the first woman to break the sound barrier.
