THE AMERICAN BEACON & NORFOLK & PORTSMOUTH DAILY ADVERTISER, Virginia, Sept. 27, 1839 Page 2 has a very historic report on the Amistad slave ship case, headed: "Amistad" "Decision of Judge Thompson".
There were two Amistad trials, one criminal and one civil. This reports the federal criminal trial presided over by a justice of the U. S. Supreme Court. The charges were for murder, mutiny, and piracy against the Africans of the Amistad. After three days of arguments, Judge Thompson ruled that the court had no jurisdiction over the charges, because the alleged crimes had been committed on a Spanish ship in Spanish waters and were therefore not crimes punishable under U. S. law. This newspaper reports that historic decision.
This slave ship case was the subject of a 1997 film "Amistad" by Stephen Spielberg.
