* Early Erie Canal planning ?
Year was omitted in the masthead but documents inside are dated 1812.
Of interest is over half a page headed: "The Grand Canal" being the famous Erie Canal, with thoughts concerning its construction and its great value to the country, this being 5 years before construction would begin. One bit notes: "...that the project of making a canal communication from the Great Lakes to Hudson river is by far the most important that has heretofore been presented to any of the the United States..." which proved to be very true.
Included is an 8 page "Supplement" issue which begins with a letter inviting Thomas Jefferson to be a member of the "Society of Artists of the United States", with his reply signed: Thos. Jefferson, followed by another letter asking hi to be president of te Society, with his response refusing because he believes such an honor belongs to: "...its younger members, to their zeal & energy, & not to the languid imagination and wearied faculties of age..." also signed by him: Thomas Jefferson.
Complete in 24 pages, 6 by 9 3/4 inches, nice condition but with a small piece from the bottom of the last leaf not affecting any mentioned content.
As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
