DAILY PROGRESS, New Bern, North Carolina, August 17, 1861

* Very rare Confederate title from North Carolina

Certainly one of the less common titles from the Confederacy, as rarely have I seen it offered. This coastal town didn't remain Confederate for very long as it fell to General Burnside in April, 1862. So truly "Confederate" issues can be difficult to come by.
Among the front page items are: "The Legislature" "As We Predicted", the latter being an editorial piece beginning: "We long since predicted that the Yankees would be fighting among themselves before the war was over, and sure enough it has commenced....".
Also on the ftpg: "From Washington--Weakness of the Hessian Army" "From Washington--Inhuman Treatment of our Prisoners--List of their Names, Etc." "War News! - War Rumors!". Plus there is also a: "Proclamation By the President concerning alien enemies, signed in type: Jefferson Davis (see images). This is followed by: "Regulations Respecting Alien Enemies". A few other items as well.
The back page is entirely taken up with ads and notices.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a one column masthead, which was common among Confederate newspapers as every effort was made to conserve printing space since most paper mills were in the North. Nice condition.
